assuming he's traveling back into his own timeline, if he went back in time one second and stabbed himself, he'd be stuck in that second forever, because of the theory of relativity, from his standpoint time would be absolutely stuck, and hence the time ruining.

except many worlds says that once the past happens, it is permanent. the closest you can come to time travel is to find a universe that is the same as yours at the time you want to visit. so that explanation still fails.
