You citizens of a republic may titter at this illustration but I live in a country where we still have a King (or a Queen or an ambitious Court Sorceror…) and this usage of the royal "I" is all too accurate. Every St Swithun's Day, all the inhabitants of my village hide in stables, down wells, in church vestries, and in hollow trees lurking deep in the doomsday forest, all so as to avoid the passing of the royal hunting party as it rampages through the old shire barking unreasonable orders through the medium of the royal "I". Three years ago I lost my eldest brother when the King proclaimed "I shall wage war on the savages of the north." And of course the outcome of that campaign is well known…
